The Grand Stage of Malta’ Temple builders aligned with both Heaven and Earth. Standing proud on a cliff overlooking the deep blue Mediterranean, Ħaġar Qim is one of Malta’s most spectacular prehistoric temples. Built over 5,000 years ago — long before Stonehenge or the Great Pyramid of Giza — this sanctuary invites us to step into a world where nature, the heavens, and the divine were seamlessly connected. Massive megaliths, some weighing more than 20 tons, form an extraordinary structure aligned with the movements of the sun. During the summer solstice, the first rays of dawn pierce its entrance to illuminate the inner chamber, linking human ritual with cosmic order. Within these walls, archaeologists discovered iconic goddess figurines, testifying to a belief system centered on fertility, abundance, and the Great Mother. Hidden in Malta’s rugged limestone countryside lies a riddle carved into the earth itself — the enigmatic cart ruts of Clapham Junction. Stretching for hundreds of meters and cutting deep into the bedrock, these parallel grooves intersect and overlap like a prehistoric railway station, a resemblance that inspired the quirky British nickname. But what are they? Were they tracks used to haul megaliths to Malta’s great temples? Channels for water or agricultural use? Or perhaps sacred pathways marking ritual journeys across the land? Archaeologists debate endlessly, but no definitive answer has emerged. What we know is that these scars are prehistoric, older than the Roman Empire, older even than the Phoenicians, carved at the dawn of Malta’s history. To walk among them is to step into a puzzle where every theory fuels the imagination. Surrounded by untouched landscape, far from modern bustle, Clapham Junction invites visitors to pause and wonder at the ingenuity, effort, and mystery of Malta’s first builders. Finally, we enter their most intricate artistic expression, where ritual, art, and belief meet. If Ħaġar Qim shows us grandeur and Clapham Junction leaves us guessing, Tarxien reveals the artistry and symbolism of Malta’s prehistoric culture at its height. Nestled within a modern town, this temple complex dates to around 3150 BC and represents the pinnacle of megalithic craftsmanship. Here we find intricate spiral carvings, altars, and the famous fragments of colossal goddess statues, once towering over worshippers as embodiments of fertility and abundance. The walls also bear rare reliefs of bulls and goats, linking ritual life to the rhythms of farming. Unlike the stark power of earlier sites, Tarxien feels intimate and richly decorated, a sanctuary where ritual met art. Later, during the Bronze Age, the site was reused for cremations, showing its lasting spiritual significance. Walking through Tarxien, one senses both the vitality and fragility of a culture that flourished, created wonders, and then vanished. Tour Important Information
This tour involves some walking. We have to go down and climb back up some steps at the catacombs (unfortunately not wheelchair accessible). It is best to wear comfortable shoes. Malta’s sunshine is bright and hot most of the year so a pair of sunglasses and a hat are strongly recommended.
Walking at Clapham Junction could be challenging as the pathways are scant and stony making this tour not wheelchair accessible, unfortunately.
